Stepping stones

For anyone heading to the Edinburgh Fringe this summer, one piece of artwork literally worth walking on is artist Martin Creed’s grandiose stairway made from marble gleaned from around the world.

Commissioned by the Fruitmarket Gallery, Work No. 1059, 2011 (Scotsman Steps) is part of Creed’s 2010 Solo exhibition at The Fruitmarket, Down Over Up, which featured amongst other things a staircase that can be played as a series of piano notes.

What’s wonderful about this playful work is that it allows this kind of human collaboration to happen…

I’ll vividly remember both sets of stairs – indeed both are etched in my consciousness. To create something that enables playful creativity and collaboration or something extraordinary embedded in the everyday, as simple as a staircase… Wonderful.
